Statement: Canadian Centre for Child Protection Supports UK’s Online Safety Bill
For Immediate Release
The Canadian Centre for Child Protection (C3P) applauds the UK’s continued leadership and efforts to better protect children online with the introduction of the Draft Online Safety Bill today.
Regulation as outlined in the bill is a significant step towards ensuring the transparency and accountability of tech companies, which for far too long have operated without any oversight. The cost of this inaction has been paid by children and survivors of online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) worldwide.
The fight against online child exploitation requires a coordinated and global response from governments willing to enact laws that hold tech accountable for content on their platform, and penalizes those who do not follow an established duty of care.
In the coming weeks, C3P will be issuing our first Project Arachnid Report to expose what we see as the main systemic failures on the part of government and industry. The purpose of this report is to arm governments and policymakers with key insights required to make informed decisions in reducing the availability and distribution of CSAM on the internet.
The UK government has taken a bold step forward in the fight to protect children. Now is the time for the rest of the world to step up and take similar actions to prioritize the protection of children online.
